Better known as an energy supplier, until recently, SSE also offered a broadband service. How did it compare with more established broadband providers such as BT, Sky and TalkTalk?

In August 2022, SSE was acquired by TalkTalk. Existing customers will continue to receive their service and pay the same amount, but eventually they'll be transferred to TalkTalk.

What makes a Which? Recommended Provider?

Which? Recommended Providers are the cream of the crop, and the accolade is only given to broadband companies that achieve a customer score of 70% or above.

That's not all. We know that price is important, so companies can only be Recommended Providers if they charge a reasonable price for their services. If they charge too much they're not eligible, whatever score they receive in the survey.

SSE broadband deals

SSE offers two widely available fibre broadband packages, both of which have an 18 -month fixed term. Customers in certain areas can also access its ultrafast fibre services which have average speeds as high as 900Mbps and are offered for a 24-month fixed term.

All of SSE's broadband deals include phone services (i.e. you can't choose a package excluding this), and there's no option to add a TV service. All packages include unlimited downloads and SSE does not apply traffic management.

SSE’s prices are usually fairly competitive if you bundle in an additional service, so they're likely to be even more appealing to existing SSE energy customers. Unlike some broadband providers, SSE commits to keep the price of your broadband deal the same for the length of your contract.

SSE also offers a 'Happiness Guarantee' for broadband and phone customers. If you sign up to a fixed term contract and are unhappy with an aspect of the service that SSE is unable to fix, you can leave without having to pay a termination fee if you do so in the first 60 days of your contract.

SSE broadband speeds

SSE two widely available superfast fibre packages have average speeds of either 35Mbps or 63Mbps depending on the package selected.

If you can access an ultrafast fibre deal, there are a couple of extra options on the table - SSE also offers deals with average speeds of 100Mbps, 200Mbps, 500Mbps and 900Mbps in certain locations.
