The Emma the Original – one of the most popular mattresses on the Which? website –the double mattress is currently on offer, again, direct from Emma as part of its Spring Sale for £379.20

We like: Breathable
We don't like: It has a bit of a smell when first opened
This Silentnight mattress is comprised almost entirely of foam, with a 17cm foam core topped by 2.4cm of memory foam. The seven internal 'zones' that it takes its name from are designed to provide areas of targeted support for different parts of your body.
At 17.2kg, it's much lighter than a lot of the foam mattresses we've tested. It doesn't come with grab handles for moving it, but it's so light you shouldn't need them.
Our experts found it had medium firmness, though slightly on the softer side. We rated it a 6.7 on our scale from one (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

We like: 200-night trial, removable washable cover

The Emma Smart Hybrid, Emma's first hybrid mattress available in the shops, is on offer at £559. We last saw it retailing at £879 at Furniture Village.
Our experts have rated this mattress as average warmth to lay on, which makes it suitable for most people.
Emma says this mattress is a medium firmness and our own independent firmness tests agree. We rank it 4.6 on a scale from one (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

The Simba Hybrid is Simba’s bestselling hybrid mattress. Simba says the perfect mattress didn’t exist, so it invented one with ‘gravity-defying comfort’ and a ‘unique, patented spring-comfort layer’ for a cooler sleep.
It's made up of several layers including a 15.7cm core of foam on which sits another 3cm foam layer, a 2.5cm layer of pocket springs and a 2cm layer of foam, all topped off with a soft breathable cover.

We like: 200-night sleep trial

The Emma Premium Hybrid, formerly known as the Original Hybrid, is current selling just over £600 from Emma.
It is made up of a 12.5cm pocket-sprung core, sandwiched between layers of foam and memory foam. It also has a removable cover. Our experts have rated this mattress as warm to lie on, which isn't unusual for for this type, but some people may prefer a cooler-feeling mattress when they get into bed.
Emma says this mattress has a medium firmness and our own independent firmness tests agree. We rank it 4.7 on a scale from one (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

We like: Easy to move around on
We don't like: Lack of grip handles make this hefty mattress tricky to move
Dunlopillo is famed for its latex mattresses, and the Den Hybrid mattress has a 16cm pocket coil-spring core surrounded by multiple layers of latex foam.
Our tests rated it as 6.4 on a scale from one (very firm) to 10 (very soft), so it’s a touch towards the softer end of the spectrum.
Depending on where you buy it from, this mattress can come with a 60-night comfort trial, but some places don't offer any trial nights, so check before you buy if you’re shopping online.

Whether you're desperate for an Emma mattress or want to swap your old one for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your chosen brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain.
Offers come and go throughout the year. But, be warned, the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs.
Make sure you're prepared when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in store.
You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or ads popping up on Facebook and, generally, we've seen a range of different deals. You'll also spot free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing sale reductions. And, although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past, we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering.
This means it's worth checking the website as a starting point before comparing deals. Over the past year, we've seen sales with up to 60% off.

The Emma Original mattress is one of the most popular reviews on the Which? website.
This bed-in-a-box brand delivers its rolled-up mattresses direct to your door and offers a sleep trial (currently 200 nights). There are four mattresses in the range and, from what we've seen, a variety of deals are available during different months. So it's worth keeping an eye on its website or on social media.
Generally, the biggest discount we've seen is around 50%, but recently we've seen even more off. So 50% off is a good guide if you're after an Emma mattress but aren't sure when to take the plunge.

Eve is another bed-in-a-box mattress brand and is now owned by Bensons for Beds.
Mattress deals can be found on the brand's Eve Sleep website or via some retailers. Similar to Nectar, Eve also offers a one-year sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress. If you don't love it, you can send it back free of charge.
Be warned, though: if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial nights offer might not apply.
As a guide, we've seen deals with anything from 20% to 30% off, and up to 50% more recently. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these offers can apply only to certain mattresses, if you spend above a particular amount, or for new customers.

You might not see Ikea mattresses discounted, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 11 of them on our website, ranging from £85 up to around £600, with an average price of £227. Find out which are the top five most popular Ikea mattresses.

Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door. The brand has increased its sleep trial to one year, similar to those offered by Eve Sleep and Nectar. Simba offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey.
We've spotted a range of deals from Simba, offering between 25% and 40% off. But, as a rule, anything from 30% to 35% is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though, as we've spotted there can be conditions attached, such as a minimum spend or a discount on a particular mattress.

Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – allow you the time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period.
This can be useful if you want to try a different type of mattress, but aren’t sure it will be right for you.
A long sleep trial lets you try a mattress during the different seasons of a year and will give you time to adjust to a new type of mattress, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you have back pain, for example, it could take quite a while to adjust to a new mattress.
Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached.
If you're buying a mattress with a sleep trial offer, check the T&Cs before you buy. See how many nights you'll need to keep it for, if you need to use a mattress protector and what you need to do to return it if it's not right for you.
Also bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial (and whether a sleep trial applies at all) might differ from those that would apply if you bought directly from the mattress brand.
