Discover our expert pick of the best laptop deals - these are great deals on laptops that perform well in our independent lab tests. You can use our advice to help you quickly make the right choice when buying a laptop in the sales. 

Big manufacturers launch their new laptop ranges on an annual basis, even before the previous year’s stock has sold out. This, along with heavy competition between brands and retailers, means there are usually good deals around. And if nothing catches your eye in the sales, there are always new laptop deals around the corner.

However, not every deal is as attractive as it might appear. Read on for our expert pick of genuine laptop deals on models that score well in our tests and are on sale at a good price. This month we've found some significant savings, including a laptop that's 40% off its £999 RRP.

We like: Fast performance 

We don't like: Touchpad a little laggy

HP has produced a great package with the 13.3-inch Envy x360. We found it was fast when dealing with everyday tasks, and the impressive screen made for a good viewing experience. We were also impressed with the array of ports provided – two USB 3 ports, two USB-Cs, a headphone jack and a micro SD card slot.

The touchpad is accurate, but we found it was a touch slower to make an initial response than some other laptops we've tested. 

At the time of checking this laptop was £270 off at HP.com - making it a cracking deal.

Our pick: Acer Swift 1 SF114-34 (typical price - £499)

• Pentium Silver N6000 processor
• 4GB Ram
• 128GB SSD

We like: Thin and light

We don't like: Narrow screen viewing angles 

At 1.35kg and 17mm thick, this laptop is light and compact enough to slip into whatever backpack or tote bag you have to hand when heading out for the day. There are lighter 14-inch laptops, but none are this cheap. There’s also a Full HD screen – not always featured on laptops at this price – and two USB ports, a USB-C, HDMI and a headphone jack. 

There is no SD card slot or DVD drive. But if you need either, relatively cheap USB adaptors for both are available online.

This laptop is frequently on offer, but it's still worth snapping up at a discounted price as we suspect this laptop won't be available brand-new for too much longer.

Laptop deals in the sales: under £500

Samsung Galaxy Book 2 (typical price - £569)

• Intel Core i3-1215U processor
• 8GB Ram
• 256GB SSD storage

We like: Large screen

We don't like: Mediocre sound in our tests

This is a large laptop with a 15.5-inch screen built around a six-core Intel Core i3-1215U processor, 8GB Ram and 256GB of SSD (solid-state drive), of which 175GB is free for personal use. If you need more storage, there’s a spare empty bay for a secondary SSD. 

You get a good selection of connections, including two USB 3.2 ports, two USB-C ports (one to charge the laptop), an HDMI video output and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone audio jack. There’s also a microSD memory card reader.

Laptop deals in the sales: £500-£700

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 (typical price - £629)

• Intel Core i5 processor
• 12.6-inch screen
• 128GB SSD

We like: Speedy performance, lightweight design

We don't like: Low-res screen, not many ports

This dinky Windows laptop is thin and light, and is ideal if you value portability over screen space. 

While it doesn't have the best selection of ports, the Core i5 processor should help you get your day-to-day tasks done quickly.

Asus Zenbook 14X (typical price - £999)

• 14-inch screen
• Intel i5 processor
• 512GB SSD

We like: Speedy performance in everyday tasks

We don't like: Screen disappointing in our tests

This reasonably portable Asus laptop performs everyday tasks brilliantly and comes with a good variety of ports, including two thunderbolt compliant USB-C ports.

Its OLED screen is a bit of a disappointment. Text is readable and contrast is good, but in our tests we found it was overpowered by green and red hues.

Laptop deals in the sales: £700 and above

HP Pavilion 13-bb0003na (typical price - £850)

• 13.2-inch screen 
• 8GB Ram
• 512GB storage

We like: Good all-round performance

We don't like: Mediocre screen and sound in our tests

This compact, portable HP Pavilion can handle most everyday tasks with ease. Plus, HP has included a full-size HDMI port and a micro SD card slot, along with your standard USB ports, and a fingerprint scanner for an extra layer of security. 

The display is largely fine, but it's somewhat lacking in brightness and contrast. We found the speakers sounded shrill and lacking in bass.

Samsung Galaxy Book Flex2 5G (typical price - £999)

• 13.3-inch screen 
• 8GB Ram
• 256GB storage

We like: Thin and light

We don't like: Reflective screen

This Samsung laptop is exceptionally fast and, thanks to its compact dimensions, highly portable. The 'Flex' part of the name presumably refers to its two-in-one design - you can flip the keyboard back and use its touchscreen like a large tablet. It comes with built-in 5G support - adding to its on-the-go credentials.

The screen quality is decent, but it's shiny and isn't the best at handling reflections.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 13.5-inch (typical price - £999)

• AMD Ryzen 5
• 8GB Ram
• 256GB storage

We like: Fast 

We don't like: Not many ports

The Microsoft Surface 4 has well-optimised specs to handle everyday tasks and reasonably intensive ones well. It's extremely light, at just 1.27kg, which makes it a good choice it you regularly travel with your laptop.

It's a shame it doesn't have extra ports, as you only get a USB-C, headphone jack and a magnetic Surface Connect port for charging. You will need an adaptor if you want to plug in a monitor that uses HDMI.

LG Gram 16Z90Q (typical price - £1,549)

• Intel Core i5
• 8GB Ram
• 512GB storage

We like: Light and fast

We don't like: Webcam didn't impress in our tests

We found this LG laptop light and portable, even though it's large (16 inches). It has a good spec, plus plenty of ports – ideal if you have a lot of accessories and gadgets to plug i.

However, the webcam is a disappointment as it produces a slightly blurry and dull image.

Apple MacBook deals in the sales

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2022) (typical price - £1,225)

• Second-generation Apple M2 processor
• 8GB Ram 
• 256GB SSD storage

We like: Thin and light

We don’t like: Only two ports 

It has a 13.3in screen and weighs just under 1.4kg, which makes it the lightest of the MacBook Pros. 

There are two USB-C ports that are also compatible with the high-speed Thunderbolt 4 connection standard, one of which is used to charge the laptop. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack with advanced support for high-impedance headphones. It’s possible to buy adaptors for further connections, such as HDMI.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch 2022 (typical price - £1,249)

• Apple M2 processor
• 8GB Ram 
• 256GB storage

We like: Quiet, beautiful Liquid Retina display

We don’t like: Poorer battery life than previous models, based on our tests

This 2022 Apple MacBook Air is the latest iteration of Apple's vastly popular lightweight laptop. It has the M2 chip. 

This version also features Apple's Liquid Retina display, which is a big selling point if you're looking to edit photos and videos.

How to get deals on specific laptop brands

Laptop deals are available all year round, not just on Black Friday. If you have a particular brand in mind for your next model, you need to know where to look. Read our independent laptop reviews to ensure you get the best deal.  

Acer laptop deals

You can often find deals on Acer’s UK website that aren’t available elsewhere. The website also lists a wider range of specifications on certain models that you won’t find on the high street, so it’s always worth checking here as well as the usual online stores.

Apple laptop deals

We’ve found Apple laptops are very often cheaper, and available for faster delivery, when you don't buy direct from Apple. The main reason you’d buy directly is if you wanted a specification, such as a processor, Ram and storage combination, that isn’t available anywhere else – but be warned, this way you’re less likely to bag a bargain.

Asus laptop deals

Asus laptops are stocked by a wide range of retailers in various configurations, so it’s always worth shopping around. The company also sells directly on its website. Its prices are mostly higher than other retailers, unless you’re a student, in which case you can get 15% off if you buy direct.

Dell laptop deals

For the widest range of Dell laptops, you should look at the Dell website. If you’re thinking of buying from a retailer, check whether there’s a cheaper or higher-spec model available direct before you buy. 

Dell often has some kind of online voucher code or discount active, so it pays to wait for one before buying.

HP laptop deals

HP laptops are stocked by nearly every laptop retailer, but most of the ‘deals’ you’ll find are at Currys, with dozens of models available. Most HP laptops go on sale at a higher price and are then discounted by at least £100 after a month or so. 

HP also sells directly through its website, so it’s always worth checking there for discounts and voucher codes.

Like Asus, Lenovo models are found scattered around the high street and at online-only retailers, so it’s worth doing your research. We’ve often found you get the best price buying direct from the Lenovo website, so always check there before you buy.

When and where are the laptop sales?

You shouldn't need to pay full price for a laptop, but just because a deal exists doesn’t mean it’s worthwhile. Here's how to see through the tricks of the trade at key retailers.

Currys laptop deals and ‘clearance’ sales

At certain times of the year, Currys loads up its clearance pages with laptop deals. Despite what the term ‘clearance’ might suggest, discounts on these models can sometimes be very small. 

If you spot a discount, do check whether rival stores are selling it for less. We've seen laptops initially go on sale for a higher price and then drop to something more reasonable. 

Currys also operates a price-matching scheme, but that may not always be as good as it seems. Many of the laptops it sells are exclusive to the store; it might be an exclusive colour, or a slight change in specification, but it’s enough that the model won't qualify for a price match.

Amazon laptop deals

Amazon isn’t particularly renowned for its laptop deals, but it does have a wide variety of notebooks on sale at any given time. However, many of its bestsellers are actually quite old – some are even second-hand. It’s always worth checking Amazon, though, just in case it has a laptop you’re interested in at a discount.

Also, be wary of small-brand laptops sold exclusively on Amazon. We’ve tested a few and none of them has impressed us – despite the overwhelming number of positive reviews from buyers.

Argos laptop deals

Argos often has good deals on individual laptops, so it’s always worth checking back there to see what’s new. Watch for ‘deals’ marked as ‘WOW’, though, as these can quite often not be deals at all and simply reflect Argos wanting you to pay attention to a product. Also look for pointers that say ‘great new price’ – we’ve seen in the past that the new price can be higher than the old one.

The best bet for Argos deals is to look for ‘clearance’ deals, as these are normally genuine discounts.
